Når projektets 3D-bygningsmodel integreres med tidsplanen, kan man skabe en 4D-simulation (3D + tid) af projektet. Også kaldet 4D BIM. 4D-simulationen er et effektivt redskab til at optimere byggeprocessen og giver samtidigt et visuelt overblik for alle parter i projektet. Det giver alle det samme, klare udgangspunkt for at forstå og diskutere byggeprocessen, sikkerhedsrisici og optimeringsmuligheder.
